MATTHEW 1:1-17

Presenting the Genealogy of Jesus of Nazareth: King!

By Johnny Tatum

PART 3: JESUS – THE SON OF DAVID, OF ABRAHAM, OF ADAM

To answer the first problem, we are going to look at a second problem concerning the recorded genealogies.

As we have seen, two of the Gospels (Matthew and Luke) give the human genealogies for Jesus of Nazareth. The problem is that they both claim to be the genealogy of Jesus of Nazareth, but they are different. If you compare the genealogies of Matthew 1:1-17 and Luke 3:23-38, you will see that in part they are the same, and in part, they are different.

Let us compare these two genealogies.

The first thing we notice is they are in reverse order:

In Matthew you read down; in Luke you read up.

In the following table, the two genealogies of Jesus of Nazareth — from Abraham to David — are listed in the Matthew order.

Matthew

Luke

1:1-6

3:31-34

Abraham

the son of Abraham

begat Isaac

the son of Isaac

begat Jacob

the son of Jacob

begat Judah [and his brothers]

the son of Judah

begat Perez [and Zerah by Tamar]

the son of Perez

begat Hezron

the son of Hezron

begat Ram

the son of Ram

the son of Admin

begat Amminadab

the son of Amminadab

begat Nahshon

the son of Nahshon

begat Salmon

the son of Salmon

begat Boaz [by Rahab]

the son of Boaz

begat Obed [by Ruth]

the son of Obed

begat Jesse

the son of Jesse

begat David [the king]

the son of David

From Abraham to David, the Matthew and Luke genealogies of Jesus of Nazareth are the same, except where Luke includes one name that Matthew does not: Admin.

Some people get upset over a skipped name in genealogies recorded in the Bible. However, it was very common in the Oriental mind to skip names when tracing the descent of a person. We know Matthew skipped four people, and possibly, more.

The point is: from Abraham to David, the genealogies are the same.
