MATTHEW 1:1-17

Presenting the Genealogy of Jesus of Nazareth: King!

By Johnny Tatum

The primary purpose of studying the genealogy of Jesus of Nazareth is to prove He is the LEGAL and PHYSICAL King, specifically, King of the Jews.

PART 1: "BEHOLD, YOUR KING!"

THE GOSPELS POINT TO THE ONE WHO WAS TO COME

The Gospels [of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John] are the first four books in the New Testament, which all prove the One Who Was To Come was Jesus of Nazareth.

Why are there four Gospels? Could not one Gospel have made that simple point? Let us see.

THE FOUR "BEHOLDS"

There are four passages in the Old Testament where the word behold refers to the One Who Was To Come, as presented in the following table:

Reference

Passage

Role

Zechariah 6:12

And speak unto him, saying, Thus speaketh the LORD of hosts, saying, "Behold, the Man whose name is the Branch; and He shall grow up out of His place, and He shall build the temple of the Lord.

Behold, the Man (the Branch)!

Zechariah 9:9

Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion; shout, O daughter of Jerusalem: Behold, your King comes to you: He is just, and having salvation; lowly, and riding upon an ass, and upon a colt the foal of an ass."

Behold, your King!

Isaiah 40:9

Get yourself up on a high mountain, O Zion, bearer of good news. Lift up your voice mightily, O Jerusalem, bearer of good news; Lift it up, do not fear. Say to the cities of Judah, "Behold, your God."

Behold, your God!

Isaiah 42:1

Behold, My Servant, whom I uphold; Mine Elect, in whom My soul delighteth; I have put My Spirit upon Him: He shall bring forth judgment to the Gentiles.

Behold, My Servant!

What a pattern!

Throughout the Old Testament the One Who Was To Come was to be—

THE GOSPELS PICTURE THE ROLES

The Gospels picture four roles of the One Who Was To Come that correspond to the four beholds, as follows:

The Book

The Picture

Corresponding Role

The Gospel of Luke

Jesus as the Perfect Man

Behold, the Man!

The Gospel of Matthew

Jesus as the King

Behold, your King!

The Gospel of John

Jesus as God

Behold, your God!

The Gospel of Mark

Jesus as a Servant

Behold, My Servant!

Looking back, we know there was only one Person who could have possibly fit these four roles. However, at the time the New Testament began, it was very important that everybody know for certain who this Person was. There could be no mistake.

GOD REVEALED THE GENEALOGY OF THE ONE WHO WAS TO COME

Throughout the Old Testament, it was significant that God progressively revealed the genealogy of the One Who Was To Come. His intent was to specifically define who this Person was to be so that there would be no question about His identity.

As presented in our Matthew Bible Study Does the Old Testament Reveal the One Who Was to Come? Messiah would come first through Adam. Then the genealogy narrowed to Adam's son, Seth, through Noah's son, Shem, and then through Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Judah, and David. Importantly, Messiah was to come from David, through his son, Solomon, and then through all of the kings that followed Solomon—

PROVING A GENEALOGY

You cannot be the king if you do not have the genealogy. This is still true today.

If I were to show up in London, England and say I am supposed to be your king, the English would say You do not sound like you are supposed to be the king. What is your genealogy? I would say I am from West Texas, born in Snyder.

I could not be the king, because I could not produce the necessary genealogy.

THE GOSPELS PROVE JESUS OF NAZARETH WAS THE ONE WHO WAS TO COME

Three of the four Gospels give a genealogy of Jesus of Nazareth, as presented in the following table:

Name of the Book

Emphasis of the Book

The Genealogy Presented…

The Gospel of John

Jesus is God

This genealogy traced Jesus back to Himself, back to eternity past, because there was never a time He did not exist. Jesus is God.

The Gospel of Luke

Jesus is the Perfect Man

The genealogy began with Adam.

The Gospel of Mark

Jesus is a Servant

There was not a genealogy given, because Mark presented Jesus as the Servant, and a genealogy was not required for a servant. The only question for a servant was Can He get the job done? Mark demonstrated that about Jesus of Nazareth.

The Gospel of Matthew

Jesus is King, King of the Jews

The genealogy began with Abraham.

We will be looking at the genealogy of Jesus of Nazareth presented by Matthew [and also, by Luke]. Additionally, we will see how Matthew proves that Jesus of Nazareth is the King of the Jews.

Heavenly Father, thank You for the book of Matthew.

We thank You for this genealogy of the One Who Was To Come that proves to us, without a doubt, who Jesus is: the King of the Jews, Messiah.

We look forward to seeing a great spiritual application You have for us in the genealogy of Jesus of Nazareth: How You crashed into the Messianic line, into that genealogy. Thank You, Father, that we will also see how You crashed into ours as well.

Father, guide us and direct us as we study Your Scriptures to us.

We pray in the name of our King, Messiah Jesus. Amen.
